Behind the scenes: Purpose-built elevators power the art of opera

The Swedish national theatre’s Royal Swedish Opera and Dramaten have moved their décor workshops and studios to a new facility in Flemingsberg, Stockholm. Alimak™ has contributed two very large twin-masted goods-only elevators to the project.

Due to the project’s unique requirements, Alimak was selected by MVB and Fabege to provide vertical access solutions for the facility, thanks to our proven and reliable rack-and-pinion technology, which differs from conventional traction elevators.

The first elevator, designed to carry long theatre backdrops, is 17 metres long and 1.2 metres wide and can handle loads of up to 2,000 kg.

The second elevator is more versatile and can transport forklifts and materials weighing up to 6,100 kg. It measures 8.7 metres in length and 3.5 metres in width.

Both elevators have been installed in the new workshop and rehearsal facility by Alimak’s Swedish service team.

The elevators are used to transport backdrops and other props between three different levels of the workshops and assembly halls, where theatre scenery is created. Large customised landing doors on each floor facilitate easy loading and unloading of materials.

The new workshops in Flemingsberg were inaugurated in 2024.
